Goguryeo Kingdom (B.C.37~A.D.668)

Goguryeo is an ancient empire of the Korean Peninsula. Goguryeo covered the largest territory among the three kingdoms. It was founded in 37 BC and collapsed in A.D. 668 . Goguryeo prospered on a vast area from the south-central Manchuria to the northern part of the korean peninsula. The kingdom expanded its territory from the fierce battles against Chinese kingdoms. The founder of Goguryeo was King Chumo (Gojumong), who originally came from Buyeo. King Jumo conquered small neighboring nations like Biryu, Okjeo, Haeng-in and Yangmak by showing strong leadership and military power. In the early first century A.D. Goguryeo overpowered Buyeo. It was King Gwanggaeto who changed the map of Goguryeo. The great military campaigns of Gwanggaeto were succeeded by his son, King Jangsu. He continued his father’s enterprises and brought Goguryeo culture into peak. Goguryeo was one of the four great powers in East Asia, along with Yuyen, Norther Wei, and Song in the fifth and sixth century. Unlike Northern Wei and Song, Goguryeo was able to nurture a high quality culture while enjoying peace. Goguryeo’s glorious civilization expanded to Baekje, Silla, and Japan so far. All great powers in history perished in the long run. Goguryeo was no exception. Goguryeo failed to withstand the allied military sources of the Tang and Silla troop, and finally collapsed in A.D. 668. After the fall of Goguryeo, many Goguryeo descendants tried to revive their country. After 30 years of trying, Balhae was established in 698 by Daejoyoung, a descendant of Goguryeo.

These days, Chinese scholars argue that Goguryeo was a provincial regime of various dynasties in 'Middle China', and try to incorporate the history into that of China. Goguryeo is meaningful, and significant to all korean throughout the korean history. During the Three Kindoms period, Goguryeo reigned the present territory of North Korea. Also Goguryeo had been firmly established as a powerful kingdom and frequently clashed with China. Goguryeo was never a subordinate state of China. To protect korean history from perverted by China, we need to recognize the Goguryeo's history
